Being in good shape is an important part of being a hockey player. Everything you’ll want to do in hockey is a combination of good technique and physical strength. With limits on ice time, a very important way to become a better player is to do workouts. Here are a few playlists from Hockey Training on YouTube that should give you some nice ideas for workouts.
Hockey Speed Training
Hockey Agility Training
Hockey Conditioning Training
Hockey Resistance Training
At-Home Hockey Workouts
Stretching/Flexibility Videos
Jeremy Weiss has put together quite a large library of systems videos that go through D-Zone Coverage, Breakouts, Offensive Attacks, Forechecks, Regroups, Power Plays, Penalty Kills, and Faceoffs. Understanding these systems should give players a good idea of what’s underlying a lot of hockey plays.
If you’d like more drills to run, Jeremy Weiss has a pretty nice series of drills drawn on the whiteboard. A playlist including more than 75 different drills can be found here:
Hockey Sense (or Hockey IQ) can be hard to teach. For many, learning by doing over the course of thousands of hours of play is the primary way to develop Hockey Sense. However, we can speed up that process a little bit by analyzing how great players play and learning from it.
Elite Ice Hockey Analysis has quite a few nice videos in the catalog that break down plays and why they work.
I like to think I’m a bit of a skating expert so I plan to create quite a few skating videos. However, if you’ve come to the end here and still want more. Coach Jeremy of HowtoHockey.com put together a decent series quite a few years ago. The playlist for the series can be found here:
Theory on coaching can be a little hard to find for hockey. So much of it is really about working with people and how people learn best. One guy who does talk about it a little bit directly related to hockey is Jeremy Weiss. I don’t always agree with everything he has to say, but he puts out some nice Sound Bytes that should make you think.
The best shooting guide I’ve seen so far comes from Jeremy Rupke of How To Hockey. In it, coach Jeremy starts at the end of the shot and works his way backwards, adding power along the way.
Part 1: Wrist Snaps
Part 2: Adding More Snap Through Push-Pull
Part 3: Moving the Puck
Part 4: Weight Transfer
Part 5: Flexing the Stick
Pavel Barber – When it comes to stickhandling, Pavel Barber has been the best on YouTube for quite a long time. Here are a few links to some of his training videos:
Footwork and Stickhandling – A couple drills using an agility ladder while stickhandling.
Triple Toe Drag Drill – A very simple drill to work on your toe move.
Backhand Toe Drag – Working on a fancy move that can be quite tricky for defenders and goalies to read.
I never played goalie, but as a coach, I worked hard to learn about goaltending so that I could help my goaltenders. One area where my teams tended to make great improvements was at goaltending and a lot of what I learned came from YouTube videos.
I plan to put out a few goaltending videos myself, but in the meantime I want to share some links that helped me.
Stauber’s Goalcrease – Has some simple goaltending drills and fundamental skills. Even has a dressing tutorial.
PGD Goaltending – Only a few very old videos, but each one goes through solid fundamental skills.
KC Crease – Drills, fundamental skills, and professional analysis.
Pasco Valana – Goaltending techniques and fundamental skills.
Hope you enjoy. If there’s a good one I missed, please let me know.
